For nearly 20 years, Peter McCoy has been a name in the South Carolina legal community that is known as a tested, trusted, honorable, and ethical trial lawyer.

Peter was born in Charleston. He is the son of a retired school teacher and a career employee at Sonoco Products company. Peter earned a bachelor of arts degree in history and religion from Hampden-Sydney College in Farmville Virginia and earned his Juris Doctor from Regent University School of Law in Virginia Beach Virginia.

After clerking both summers during law school at the Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s office in Charleston South Carolina, Peter was offered a job as an Assistant Solicitor (Criminal Prosecutor) in Charleston. Peter served as an Assistant Solicitor in Charleston County for over five years where he prosecuted the most serious offenses in Charleston County. Peter tried over thirty-five jury trials and handled thousands of pleas for crimes ranging from Murder, Armed Robbery, Burglaries, Trafficking Drug Offenses, Gun Offenses, and White Collar criminal charges. He tried complex multi-codefendant cases as well as argued significant motions during his time as a criminal prosecutor.

Peter left the Solicitor’s Office in the fall of 2010 when he won election to the South Carolina House of Representatives. Peter was re-elected to this position five times and served Charleston County in the South Carolina House for a decade. During his time in the House, Peter championed significant legislation that affects Utility Companies in SC, Ethics laws in SC, Criminal laws in SC, Environmental laws in SC, and legislation to protect children.

Peter served his entire tenure in the SC House on the Judiciary Committee where he later was elected unanimously by his legislative colleagues to serve as Chairman. Peter also served on the Judicial Merit Selection Committee as well as the Colleges and University Selection Committee.

Peter was selected by the Speaker of the House to lead an investigatory panel into the failed nuclear project with VC Summer and the SCANA Corporation. During his service in the SC House, Peter was in private practice in Charleston where he focused on federal/state criminal defense, public corruption/white collar defense, DUI/DWI, wrongful death litigation, trucking accident litigation, car accident litigation, and probate work.

In February of 2020, Peter was nominated by the President of the United States of America to serve South Carolina as United States Attorney. Peter was later appointed by the Attorney General of the United States and received a unanimous vote by the United States Senate for his confirmation to the Position.

As the chief federal law enforcement officer for the entire State, Peter worked closely with a wide variety of Federal Law Enforcement Agencies (FBI, DEA, ATF, Secret Service, Homeland Security, and ICE) as well as sheriffs/chiefs across the entire State. Peter also used significant resources to build up the Civil Division in the US Attorneys Office to put an emphasis on false claims/qui tam cases. During his tenure as United States Attorney, Peter also placed a significant emphasis on public corruption, white collar prosecutions, violent crime prosecutions, RICO/Conspiracy prosecutions, and Human Trafficking prosecutions.

While Peter was United States Attorney, he was able to secure guilty pleas from SCANA executives from the VC Summer Nuclear fallout that is the biggest wire and mail fraud case the State has ever seen where restitution in the case will result in over 4 billion dollars coming back to South Carolina. He also led the office during the largest RICO/racketeering case involving criminal enterprises being run from within South Carolina prisons.

In March of 2020, Peter left the United States Attorney’s Office to open the McCoy Law Group. MLG is a small firm that focuses on Federal/State criminal defense, false claim/whistleblower cases, general civil litigation, white collar public corruption, and government affairs.

Peter’s years as an assistant solicitor, United States Attorney coupled with his years as an elected official have earned him the reputation as an honest, trusted, ethical, and fair trial lawyer. He has been awarded the key to the Town of James Island, sits on the advisory board for the Save the Morris Island Lighthouse, and is a regular lecturer on the law and politics at the College of Charleston, the Citadel, and Trident Technical College.
